Aluminum:      Alumina Zirconia used for rough grinding (CS811/CS411y, CS416 ).

Aluminum Oxide is for general purpose grinding and finishing (CS712, CS412, CS308 or CS413 or CS311 if soft aluminum). Silicon Carbide is sometimes used in abrasive machining, coil grinding, roll grinding and wide belt deburring.

 

Brass:             An alloy of zinc and copper. Alumina Zirconia used for rough grinding (CS416y oc). Silicon Carbide or Aluminum Oxide materials work about equally in most applications with AO being slightly more popular. (CS311 or CS333)

Bronze:           An alloy of copper and tin, sometimes other metals are included

Alumina Zirconia used for rough grinding (CS416 y oc). Aluminum Oxide or Silicon Carbide is used for intermediate or finishing applications. (CS311 or CS333)

 

Cast Iron:       For most types of cast iron, use Alumina Zirconia for rough grinding (CS811, CS411 x or y) and Aluminum Oxide for intermediate grinding and finishing (CS308, CS310). For Chilled Cast Iron or Grey Iron, which are glass-hard, Silicon Carbide is used (CS320, CS333).

Ceramic:         Silicon Carbide (CS321, CS320). Normally ground wet.

Chrome:          Alumina Zirconia (CS811, CS411 x or y) or Aluminum Oxide (CS308, CS310) can be used.

Copper:           Aluminum Oxide (CS311) is most common. Alumina Zirconia

(CS416 y oc) is used equally well.  Silicon Carbide (CS333) is sometimes used for finishing or polishing.

 

Ferrous

Metals:           Any metal whose primary ingredient is iron. Generally, Aluminum

Oxide (CS412, CS308) or Alumina Zirconia (CS811, CS411x or y) is used. Examples of ferrous metals include iron, tool steel, stainless steel and high nickel or cobalt alloy steels.

 

Fiberglass:      Silicon Carbide (PS11) or Aluminum Oxide (PS29, PS33) for intermediate and finish sanding. Alumina Zirconia open coat (PS36) and Silicon Carbide (CS333) are used for grinding.

 

Glass:             Usually Silicon Carbide for any application. (CS333, CS321 or CS320) Occasionally Alumina Zirconia is used for flat stock or mirror stock.

Glass is usually ground wet to reduce burning, dust and breakage.  Cork is used for wet polishing.  Klingspor does not presently offer any cork materials.

 

Granite:          Silicon Carbide (CS321 or CS320) almost exclusively. Usually is ground wet to reduce dust and eliminate burning.

 

Hastelloy:       A high temperature, nickel-based alloy metal. Alumina Zirconia (CS811, CS411 x or y) or Aluminum Oxide (CS412, CS308) are best. Silicon Carbide may be used under special circumstances.

Inconel:           A high temperature nickel and chromium alloy metal. Aluminum Oxide

(CS412, CS308) is most common. Alumina Zirconia

(CS811, CS411 x or y) is used for rough grinding.  Sometimes Silicon

Carbide is used under special circumstances.

Leather:          Aluminum Oxide (CS308, CS310) most widely used.  Alumina Zirconia

(CS411 x) is popular with shoe manufacturers.  Open coat material is also very common.  (CS416 y open coat or CS311 yx).

 

Monel:            A copper-nickel alloy with a small amount of iron and cobalt. It is  non- corrosive and used to make chemical equipment and food processing equipment etc.  Alumina Zirconia (CS811, CS411 x or y) used for rough grinding and sometimes intermediate grinding. Aluminum Oxide (CS308) for finish sanding and polishing. Sometimes Silicon Carbide (CS333) is used for polishing due to obtaining a more consistent scratch pattern.

Nickel:            Aluminum Oxide (CS412, CS308) for all. Alumina Zirconia

(CS811, CS411 x or y) sometimes used for rough grinding.

 

Non-ferrous:       Any metal not containing iron. Open Coat Alumina Zirconia (CS416 y oc CS409) for rough grinding. . Aluminum Oxide (CS311) and Silicon Carbide (CS333) are for intermediate and finish sanding. Non-ferrous metals are usually somewhat “gummy and belt speed may need to be slowed or a lubricant may need to be used.  Examples of non-ferrous metals include aluminum, zinc, brass, bronze, copper, magnesium, titanium and zirconium.

 

Paint:              Usually Silicon Carbide (PL35, PS11). Alumina Zirconia is used for rough stripping (PS36, CS416 y oc).

 

Pewter:           An alloy of tin, copper and lead.  Alumina Zirconia (CS416 y oc) for rough grinding. Aluminum Oxide (CS311, CS413) or Silicon Carbide (CS333) is for intermediate and finish sanding.  Pewter is non-ferrous.


Plastic:            Two types of plastic:

1.  Thermosetting plastics do not soften with heat, such as epoxys, phenolics, polyesters, polycarbonates, melamine, CORAIN” by Dupont and similar countertop materials like Nevamar, Fountainhead, Avonite, Formica 2000X.

2.  Thermoplastics do soften with heat.  Examples include Acrylics, Nylons, urethanes and Delrin.

 

Silicon Carbide (CS321, PS11) is recommended almost exclusively. Alumina Zirconia (CS416 y oc) is sometimes used in in rougher applications.Usually run wet especially when dealing with thermoplastics.

 

Polyester:       Used in the furniture industry to achieve a “wet look” or a highly polished finish. Klingspor PS24 is an excellent choice for stroke sanding or wide belt sanding for sanding between coats.

 

Rubber:          Almost always ground with Silicon Carbide.  Soft rubber or polyurethane is usually ground wet. (CS321/CS320)  Most other types are usually ground dry. (CS333)

 

Solder:            Alumina Zirconia or Aluminum Oxide.  (CS811, CS411 x or y / CS412)

 

 

Steel (carbon):     Alumina Zirconia (CS811, CS411 x or y) or Aluminum Oxide (CS412,  CS308)

 

Stainless Steel:    Alumina Zirconia (CS811, CS411 x or y) or Aluminum Oxide (CS412, CS308) Silicon Carbide (CS333) is sometimes used for final finishing because a more consistent scratch pattern is achieved.

 

Stellite:           A high temperature non-ferrous alloy containing cobalt, tungsten and chromium; used mostly in cutting tools for machining metal. Alumina Zirconia (CS811, CS411 x or y) or Aluminum Oxide (CS412)

 

Stone:             Silicon Carbide (CS321 / CS320 / PS11) Is ground wet to reduce heat and dust.

Titanium:        Silicon Carbide (CS333) for intermediate and finish type sanding.

Alumina Zirconia (CS409, CS811, CS411 x or y) are for rough grinding. Aluminum Oxide may react chemically with titanium which possesses a high degree of heat sensitivity.

 

Waspalloy:     A high temperature metal alloy.  Alumina Zirconia (CS811, CS411 x or y)

or Aluminum Oxide (CS412, CS308)

 

Zinc:                Silicon Carbide (CS333) for most basic zinc, such as sheets.  On zinc die casting, Alumina Zirconia (CS811, CS411 x or y) or Aluminum Oxide (CS412, CS308) are sometimes used.
