Split Belts & Belt Slippage

Reasons for Belt Slippage

  • The belt tension is too low.
  • The contact roll is worn excessively.
  • Shock load on the belt due to a big variation in workpiece thickness.
  • Dirt or dust between belt and contact roll.
  • A plain steel contact roll not providing enough traction for the belt. Try a serrated roll or knurl the surface of the roll.

Reasons for Split Belts

  • The belt is too flexible of application.
  • Burr on the contact roll or platen.
  • Contamination on the workpiece (nail, staple, etc.)
  • Excessive depth of cut or sanding pressure.
  • Contact roll and idler roll are not parallel.
  • The abrasive material is not heavy enough for application.
  • Variation in workpiece thickness.
  • Sanding in only one area of the belt. Stagger the workpieces across the width of a wide belt.
  • Worn contact roll.
