Choosing the Right Abrasive
Selecting an abrasive involves more than choosing a disc diameter or grit. The workpiece material, required removal rate, heat sensitivity, operating tool and target surface condition all influence which cutting wheel, grinding disc, flap disc or fibre disc is appropriate.
For example, an operation focused on making a narrow, controlled cut in sheet metal may require a different abrasive approach than a stainless steel fabrication job where heat discoloration is a concern. Likewise, a high-load grinding application on carbon steel has different priorities than weld blending or satin finishing. KLINGSPOR’s products provide options for these distinct metalworking needs.
Bonded Abrasives for Precision Cutting and Controlled Grinding
KLINGSPOR cut-off wheels and grinding discs are designed for use with angle grinders, gas-powered saws, stationary machines, die grinders and small cut-off tools.
For cutting applications, ultra-thin and narrow-kerf cut-off wheels help support precision cutting and reduced material waste. This also includes multi-purpose wheels for mixed stainless steel and carbon steel operations, fast & burr-free sheet-cutting options, and specialized abrasive solutions for stainless steel, container, hard-steel, non-ferrous, rail, pipe and stationary-cutting applications.
For grinding applications, KLINGSPOR grinding discs address mild steel, stainless steel, cast iron, cast steel, hardened steel, aluminum and other non-ferrous metals. Reinforced synthetic-resin construction provides stable, controlled performance across a range of work conditions.
Flap Discs for Grinding, Weld Blending, and Finishing
Flap discs combines material removal and surface preparation into a single abrasive product.
CMT
The CMT flap discs are KLINGSPOR’s quick-change flap disc format, designed to help production users make fast, convenient disc changes while retaining grinding and blending capability. It is safe for use like other flap discs and offers the same grinding/blending results.
SMT
The SMT flap discs are offered in three performance classes: SPECIAL “9,” SUPRA “6” and EXTRA “3”.
The SPECIAL series includes high-performance tools for users who need their tools to perform at peak output and reliability, even if subjected to rough applications.
The SUPRA series is the best combination of life and aggression. These type of flap discs are for users who need tools that deliver reliable and powerful performance every day.
The EXTRA series has an ideal price to performance ratio for universal use. Users who expect their tools to meet professional standards, but do not need to use them continuously, would prefer these flap discs.
TITAN
TITAN flap discs add a trimmable design that exposes fresh abrasives and can extend usable disc life. They also offer cooler-running performance, vibration-dampening yellow plastic backing plates and a built-in 5/8-inch-11 threaded arbor for tool-free spin-on changes. TITAN flap discs are designed to support high-load grinding, stainless steel finishing, reduce loading, control removal and improve surface quality.
Fibre Discs for Stock Removal & Heat Management
Fibre discs offer a flexible abrasive option when removal rate, heat management and workpiece material are important considerations. KLINGSPOR’s fibre disc product line includes five abrasive constructions: CS 561 aluminum oxide, CS 565 alumina zirconia, CS 570 lubricated alumina zirconia, FS 966 lubricated ceramic and FS 964 ceramic.
They are designed for applications ranging from surface-contaminant removal and mild weld-seam smoothing to heavy stock removal and stainless steel or carbon steel grinding. Ceramic and alumina zirconia grains provide application-specific grinding performance, while lubricated abrasives help manage heat where heat discoloration is a concern.
For those seeking to tailor a fibre disc system to a specific process, KLINGSPOR also offers medium-hard flat, hard-ribbed, and "Spiral Cool" backing pads. These options support different requirements for finish quality, workpiece adaptation, stability, stock-removal rate and cooling performance. Hard-ribbed pads can provide up to 30% higher stock removal than smooth pads, while Spiral Cool pads use air-flow channels designed to help extend disc life by 30% to 50%.
